Day 4 - Thursday morning: after a fantastic breakfast at my hotel in St. Moritz, certainly the highlight of this place ;-), I was off to take the Glacier Express train all the way to Zermatt - an eight hours journey.
Is there actually anyone who has not heard of this train before?
The train is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, it is actually advertised with being "the slowest express train in the world". It travels across nearly 300 bridges, through 90ish tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2,033 m above sea level.
The journey itself is lovely, there is so much to see, so many different things.
What I did not like too much though is the train itself. I booked rather late, so just got a seat at the aisle which I did not mind too much as had a lovely Austrian couple next to me (though the massive smart a** guy opposite me was rather annoying constantly kicking me) but it is so commercialised that it was sometimes a bit too much. There is just so often I want to be asked whether I want anything to eat, to drink, buy souvenirs etc. (which I did not do as there was no way I would spend that much on a single course of food which even didn't look very nice)
Taking pictures was also not great as the windows have this special sun protection foil on them and there were constantly reflections as can be seen on pictures - not they worked properly as still got blinded by the sun when it was out.
The weather was mad changing so quickly sometimes. We had all kind of weather from brightest sunshine to heaviest rain - incredible to watch.
Well not sure I would take this train again though I would like to take ordinary trains doing the same journey (just means to change 3/4 times) as I am sure you would be more left alone.
