Day 18 was a group free day. So I took a chance to finally to immerse into Cape Town doing and seeing the things I didn't have a chance to the other day.
First I walked towards District Six to visit the District Six Museum where I learnt more about life in District Six before thousands of people were removed from the quarter, moved to townships and their house flattened by bulldozers.
The museum is very different to "normal" museums focusing on little chapters from the people who lived there and that's what I liked about it.
I then walked around the neighbourhood, visited the well known Charly's Bakery (was not keen on the muffin though I bought, bright colours on top of it looking interesting, but tasted artificial, maybe more hype about it than the cake deserve) and viewed some other places mentioned in my tourist guide.
I went then back to the city centre and Bo-Kaap to have a closer look at some of the bit and buildings we saw the other day. I was so amazed by some buildings and could have walked around for ages.
After Bo-Kaap I just walked along a main street with some lovely buildings and ended up in the quartersTamboerskloof and later Gardens with its many beautiful Victorian buildings. There is also the German international school, a German bakery and a German book shop in the quarter so I nearly felt at home. Really weird when you go into a bakery 10,000 km away and you speak German!
It is certainly a lovely part of Cape Town; it is obvious that mainly white middle/upper class live here but it felt rather peaceful and calm and felt well walking around there - not that I ever felt like being in danger that day despite walking around on my own (and we were originally told to avoid that but I really needed "me" time and explore the city in my own speed).
Returned to the hotel in the afternoon and freshened up to take the hotel shuttle to the waterfront as I was to meet up others from the group for dinner there. Still had time to kill so I went for another walk along the coast towards Sea Point passing by e.g. the pretty Green Point Lighthouse - so relaxing!
